Patient portals can be great tools to engage your patients — if you’re using them the right way. But according to a recent Software Advice survey, a majority of Americans don’t use online patient portals and as many as 33% of patients don’t even know whether they have access to a patient portal.

The best way to get at least 5% of your patients actively using your patient portal? Know your audience and what they’re looking for. If you’ve already promoted your patient portal and aren’t seeing enough engagement, it’s time to re-evaluate what features and resources your patients really want in their patient portal.

That’s where this handy infographic from Xerox comes in. Based on a survey of over 2,000 respondents, the infographic shows generational preferences in how patients want to use patient portals. For example, Boomer patients are most likely to use a patient portal to schedule appointments, whereas Millennials want portals to feature personalized recommendations to improve their health. The key takeaway? Patient portals that offer online access to medical records have the chance to turn most non-users (of all ages) into more proactive and engaged patients.
